Ema J — Review Review 1

I still think about how close we came to not knowing what happened. My 9-year-old was walking the short block home from a friend's house when a car slowed beside her. The driver told her I'd sent him to pick her up. She knew that wasn't true, but she froze. We'd practiced pulling the little PengoGuard strap at home, so that's what she did. The alarm went off, a neighbor came out onto her porch, and the car drove away. My daughter ran straight to that neighbor. We called the police and reported what she remembered. Before that day I thought buying a safety alarm was probably overdoing it. What stays with me is that she couldn't find the words to shout, but she remembered one simple movement. I don't pretend a siren can guarantee anyone's safety. I'm just grateful she had a way to get somebody's attention.

I was supposed to be keeping an eye on my nephew at the county fair. I looked away for maybe ten seconds to pay for lemonade. Then I heard this piercing alarm over all the rides and music. I turned and saw him standing beside a man I didn't recognize, pulling on the orange strap attached to his penguin. The guy had been telling him his parents were waiting around the corner. As soon as people looked over, the man walked off. I got to my nephew, took him straight to security and called his mom. My hands were shaking more than his. He's always treated the penguin like a silly backpack charm. That day, it was the reason I turned around when he needed me.

My niece had just finished dance practice and was waiting outside for me. Traffic held me up, and a woman she didn't know came over saying I had asked her to give my niece a ride. Thankfully, my niece stayed by the studio door. When the woman kept insisting, she pulled her PengoGuard. The noise brought one of the dance instructors outside, and the woman left before anyone could get her name. I arrived a few minutes later to find my niece crying in her teacher's arms. We reported the encounter and changed our pickup rule: she waits inside until she sees me. I bought the alarm because it was cute. I never expected her to have a reason to use it.

I used to think my son was old enough to stand at the school-bus stop on his own. One morning, a stranger in a van stopped and offered him a ride. My son said no. The person kept talking and started opening the door, so he pulled the alarm hanging from his backpack. The crossing guard down the street heard the noise and came over. The van left. When the school called me, I felt sick. We talked afterward about staying near other families, moving away from a vehicle, and getting an adult involved. That little alarm didn't replace any of those lessons. It gave him another way to ask for help when he was scared.

I take my grandson to the same playground every Thursday. A woman started talking to him near the gate about a lost puppy. I noticed them walking toward the exit, and before I could get there his penguin alarm started shrieking. Other parents looked up immediately. I ran over and held his hand while the woman hurried away. He told me later that she'd asked him to come help find her dog. We let the park staff know and told his parents everything. I wish children never had to think about things like this. I'm proud that he remembered what his family taught him: don't go anywhere with a stranger, make noise, and find your trusted adult.

I was walking my best friend's daughter back from the library when we realized the same person had followed us for several blocks. He crossed the street when we did and kept calling out to her. I didn't know what he wanted, but she was frightened. She pulled the little strap on her PengoGuard and the sound was impossible to ignore. An employee at the corner café opened the door and waved us inside. We called her dad from there. Maybe the man would have kept walking. Maybe not. We couldn't know. What I do know is that the alarm made other people notice us immediately, and it helped us get to a safer place.

My little brother used to roll his eyes when Mom clipped the pink penguin onto his bag. He said it was for babies. One afternoon he was riding his scooter near our street when a man beside a car tried to get him to come closer. He backed away, pulled the strap, and kept moving toward our house. Our neighbor heard the alarm, came outside, and helped him call Mom. I was at work when I got the call. I can't describe how awful it felt hearing he had been scared and alone. He still carries the penguin now, and none of us tease him about it. We also practiced what to do if an adult he doesn't know asks him to approach a vehicle.
